Can I purchase a foot splint with my Health Savings Account (HSA)?

I have achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis that developed while working a job where I was constantly on my feet. I have tried stretches with little improvement. I would like to try a night splint but I’m tight on funds. I have an HSA that I could use but I want to make sure I don’t get a tax penalty.

Could I just purchase one over the counter or on the internet, or do I have to get my doctor to prescribe one or order it for me in order to be able to use my HSA to buy it?

You can purchase the splint with your HSA money. The IRS says anything medical that you could deduct from your taxes can be purchased. You can purchase it over the counter and don’t need a prescription. See IRS publications 959 and 502 on the IRS website for confirmation.

You can buy bandaids with your HSA, so you can buy a splint for medical purposes.
