Can I open a Health Savings Account without having health insurance?

health savings account
pea in a pod asked:

I’m 21 and about to incur medical expenses.
Dental cleaning, xrays, fillings
Monthly birth control
Anemia medication
blood test, doctor’s visits
and possible eye exam and eye glasses

I turned 21 and lost Medicaid. With an HSA account, you can deduct on taxes. So I was wondering if I should open one. See I would be spending my own income, so I thought why not deposit like $1G into an HSA. I already paid for wisdom teeth extraction at $1776.

Did you hear you can’t use your HSA(Health Savings Account) $2,000 non-taxed dollars to purchase?

health savings account
Glow in the Dark asked:

vitamins or supplements? Here we’re getting punished again for taking care of ourselves, BUT it’s ok to use it for prescription medication.?

I thought we were moving towards preventative health care, but the pharmaceuticals have found another way to control us.

Insurance problems?

health saving account
DaringEscape asked:

I’m really backed into a corner here. I’m currently a full-time college student living with friends in an apartment. I don’t have a good relationship with my parents and don’t get any help. However since I am still only 22 their income comes into account with everything. They won’t put me on their insurance so I need to get it myself. What do I do? I only make like $300 a month with my on campus job. I work a good job over the summer and save for my apartment. How can I afford to pay my cell-phone, car insurance, and then have money for health insurance and food? Man…life *****.

Do you have a Health Care Flexible Spending Account?

health saving account
Gerry D asked:

Are you also aware of the Impact of Health Care Reform on Your Health Care Flexible Spending Account?

I am attempting to understand now what it is that I as a consumer will have to do in the event that my 10 year old son goes to the Doctor, receives a prescription, and Medical Advice also tells me that I should purchase an over-the-counter medicine such as Motrin or some other easy to purchase item. Am I now going to have to ask this same Doctor for a prescription in order to get reimbursed? It sure looks that way to me. Before I would merely purchase the OTC medicine, save the receipt, submit the receipt with a reimbursement form and then in a few days the reimbursement would show up in my Bank Account.

Regardless of party affiliation I find this new “rule” ridiculous. I feel that there will now be a “creep” or slow decay of the current Health Plan I am on and other related benefits that I am already paying too much for. I also figure I can’t be the only one who feels this way nor am I the only one that is perplexed why this has to be the way it is.

Your thoughts? (I also wish Yahoo Answers had an Insurance section to the Health category as this topic in the next few years is going to become more complicated).

Where should I look to find high-deductible health insurance plans to cover only major illnesses/injuries?

health savings account
Neal asked:

My local Blue Cross Blue Shield is what nearly everyone in my area has. They do not offer any high-deductible plans that cover only major illnesses/injuries. All their plans cover everything from sprained ankles to the common cold. As a result, all their plans are unreasonably expensive for what I want.

I don’t need or want to pay for coverage for every little thing. I just want coverage for major things costing many thousands of dollars (e.g., cancer, a broken neck, etc). I’ll use a Health Savings Account for common everyday health care.

Where should I look for this kind of coverage? If no local health insurance companies are offering it in my area, can I buy it from some national or out-of-region company?

Thanks!

Can I use my HSA for Proactiv?

health savings account
AnonymousNickname asked:

Is Proactiv eligible for HSA? It looks like the health savings account can be used for acne treatments (OTC), but I’m not sure if this would qualify. I’m thinking about getting off Proactiv since it’s so expensive.

Health care options for someone not old enough for medicare/medicaid?

health savings account
beansboy4u asked:

A friend of mine has been going through a rough time lately and is out of options in caring for his mother.

He is 23, and his mother is 49. She has been unemployed for several years now and depleted her savings/unemployment accounts some time ago. They applied for Medicare, early last year, but were denied care. I do not fully understand her illness, but it has to do with her heart rate dropping to a point where she gets sick, so it has hindered her from finding work. She’s been to numerous doctors to see what is wrong, but it’s been a while since her last visit because she no longer has insurance, and no one had been able to diagnose her with anything. Shes been turned down for disability. Hes been taking care of her from a distance, shes in Miami and hes in Key West. He recently lost his job and can no longer care for her, on top of her house being foreclosed. They have no money for assisted living at this point.

What can he do?? If anything, he’s desperate.

Thanks for your help.

What health insurance should I get?

health savings account
Brandon asked:

Here’s the stats: 24 non smoking male major medical problems and 25 non smoking female no major medical problems.

I’m going into business for self and need health insurance coverage. I want this to be as cheap as possible and essentially just cover it if something major like a wreck happens so I’m not stuck footing a $50,000 dollar hospital bill. 5k deductible is what i’m comfortable with. Also, I have heard about health savings accounts that roll over year to year. How do I go about getting one of those? Or what other suggestions do you have?
I’m sorry, a correction is that neither of us have any major medical problems. Maybe 2-3 doctor visits per year each.
