Should I short-sale or default on our home to start rebuilding our savings?

MaskMan asked:

10 months of unemployment and my wife losing her job at the same time has wiped out our savings accounts as a family. I’m 37 years old, married with 2 toddlers, zero savings, and was able to finally find a 50k/year job in I.T., but bills, health care costs, everyday expenses, and mortgage payments eat up almost my entire paycheck with little room for any sort of savings. Our home was purchased in 2006 for 215K and is currently underwater roughly 50K-60K, with it’s value still declining. My wife and I are extremely frugal with our spending habits and she’s staying home now to raise the kids. I’m extremely concerned over the fact we cannot save any reasonable amount of money for those life emergencies that pop up…car, house, health, etc. Not to mention thoughts of our kids and college, or even retirement.

I’m afraid that if we don’t get out of our house and downsize, we’ll never be in a position to start saving properly again. Sure, my wife should be able to go back to work in a couple years once the kids are in school, but I’m afraid we may end up in a credit card hole by the time. I don’t see the value returning to our house over the next 10-15 years and that’s a long time to fore go any sort of reasonable savings plans. Looking for thoughts.

Why do they always deduct Medicare tax from my paychecks yet I don’t have any form of health assistance?

Pr1nce5s ? asked:

I had to spend my savings a few months ago on medical bills …let me add to the rant that I am not diagnosed and still in pain because the regardless of all the tests and everythihg they put me through, my doctor didn’t know what was wrong, so I feel like I was ripped off. All the ***** did was lie on her back against the wall, like way chill and with my cash in her pocket say: “I don’t know what’s wrong. If it gets worse just call 911″. Now I live in pain and discomfort while my poor bank account suffers from nostalgia missing the 4-figure greens that it once gave shelter to.

So anyway…. I’ve been working since I was 16 and I’m 22 now. In 6 years I’ve never received a penny in medical assistance. Anyone mind explaining why they still take that money anyways?

OBAMA!!! Help this sister out. Tell them to give me back my Medicare money or whatever they take from my taxes. I’m sure I could buy some cute outfits with the medicaid money I’ve had withheld through the years and make sure I look drop d.e.a.d. gorgeous whenever “If it gets worse” happens.
Medicaid, Medicare, you get the point. One of those medic stuff is always taken out of my checks.
And ***** that! I don’t wanna wait until I’m 65. Hey government, why don’t you help me pay another doctor by giving me my Medicair/are money back so I can make it to 65?

Were my parents out of line?

CapAIM asked:

I’m a 28 year old graduate student, majoring in education. About nine months ago, I was forced to take a what was supposed to be a six month temporary position at an engineering company which I got through an employment agency that has since been extended indefinitely. My primary responsibilities are scanning legal contracts. Work-wise the hours are long and the pay is less than I made than while I was collecting unemployment. One of my co-workers, who has been a temp with the same company for 8 years is also the office brown noser and tattle tale who will do anything to make you look bad to the boss while occasionally taking credit for projects I had completed.

Earning less money has also taken its toll on my finances. Currently I am unable to afford basic necessities such as a car insurance and textbooks. Paying the rent each month has often left my account overdrawn and my savings has dwindled down to a few hundred dollars. I only need one course to graduate but I might not be able to afford it. Recently I was looking into ways in which I could gain classroom experience and obtained a substitute license, which give me some teaching experience and possible even lead to a full-time job. The pay rate would also allow me to quit my job job since I would make double what I make scanning.

Complicating matters were my job, which recently offered me health insurance and my meddlesome and over controlling parents who have advised me to not to quit my job and take the health insurance, even though there’s no way I could possibly afford to do that. They also told me to take a few days off during the week in order to take substitute teaching jobs. Despite repeated attempts to explain the facts to him, even showing them how much I’d be making, they do not consider substitute teaching to be a real job.

After two weeks of attempting to balance a full-time job and substitute teaching, in which I was forced to turn down numerous substitute assignments, I decided to quit my full-time job and turn my attention to substitute teaching. After I told my parents about my decision, they berated and insulted me calling me stupid and selfish for quitting my job. They also have stopped talking to me, and told me not to ask for their help when I was homeless and living on the streets. Was I wrong for quitting my job ?
Hannah, I already have a job on the weekends and I’ve gotten called everyday since I became an substitute, Sometimes I’ve gotten multiple calls in a day.

How come so many people place looks before virtue, kindness, intelligence, etc?

Juan Lopez asked:

Hello. My name is Juan Lopez, and recently I’ve been very deep in thought. I am 17 years old, and I just can’t seem to find a girl. I’ll admit I’m not very handsome. But I gave other good qualities. I have straight A’s, really high A’s in all AP classes plus tons of extracurricular activities. And I still have time for friends and family, and I hope some dates. Also, I’m extremely nice. I’ll gel ANYONE out and love to donate money to charity, volunteer, and work with children and the elderly. I come from a. Wealthy family, plus have my own ambitions and savings accounts with almost $10,000 saved up, plus a large inheritance. I am athletic and care for my health. And finally, I don’t really show off. I don’t like to. I’m generally quiet and kind of shy, but I can be funny and talkative when I want to. Could it be that? Or could it be my appearance?

Or I might be too-romantic. I love Romeo and Juliet kind of Romance, serenading, singing, roses, chocolates, romantic dinners, flowers, and engagement rings with diamonds the size of your fist. I love talking, sharing emotions, and just spending time with someone. I’m not in it for sex, I’ll wait whatever she wants before that. I’ll protect her, care for her, love her, and tell her how much I love her. I don’t see what I’m doing wrong, any advice?
