What is the purpose of paying medical insurance? How was society indoctrinated into believing it’s necessary?

health saving account
whateva asked:

I graduated from college a few months ago and was recently hired at my first “real job.” You know, full time with “benefits.” It seems the only insurance my company offers is Aetna, and that costs $100 a month. Now, I am thinking, if I pay insurance every month, I still have to pay a small fee when I visit the doctor, and if I have a major illness or accident, I will have to pay a LOT because no matter how long you’ve had insurance, they will not cover everything. This why I wonder, what is the point of having insurance? I bet you that if I kept my own independent account for health only and put 100 every month, I would have more than enough to cover something major if it were to happen a few years down the road, than if I pay a greedy insurance company.

I don’t know, the system is really messed up. I would like to hear what others think and get some advice, because I’m new to this whole ordeal of having to choose my own insurance. I see it as a pointless expense and think that I may end up saving more if I pay the doctor when I do need it, rather than supporting a group of big whigs who made us believe we need to have insurance. Please help. What do you guys think? I need to hear your thoughts.

What should I do with my health savings account?

health saving account
I need answers asked:

I have about $16,000 in HSA.

But next year I’ll become an employee and will have a “regular” insurance.

I’m 53 years old. I’m planning to work for another 7 years then semi-retire.

Should I just save my HSA till I’m 60 years old and use it then when I may have to get my own insurance?

Or should I spend it in the next 7 years for deductibles, which will be very low next year?

How were your finances when you were in your late 20s?

health saving account
happypants asked:

i find that their are people in the mid to late 20s who have wondeful credit AND a hefty saving account, but then there are people who have horrible credit and NO savings accout–just wondering what is normal to have in your mid to late 20s.

i’m 26.

i have a car payment (200 a month, no interest) and student loans (30,000). i paid off all my credit card bill. i only have 300 in my savings. my credit score is 720. i live in an apartment. i make 31000 ( i work for non-profit–mental health). i live in an apartment with my fiance and son (unplanned, but welcomed). and i’ve been out of my house since 23 (graduated college at 22; during college, i lived on campus). i’m just wondering if i’m really far behind for my age group.

My husband smokes and is unlikely to stop even with my requests to save our bank account and his health. Can he get them cheaper online? There are lots of sites, do they work? Do cigs actually arrive? Are they legal?

asking on behalf of my cousin who doesnt’ have a Y! account.what are your thoughts on this? best answer?

health saving account
LK asked:

My cousin Ryan got married last year. Eight months into his marriage, my other cousin; Ryan’s brother Jess, moved into Ryan’s apartment with Ryan and his wife because Jess didn’t get along with their step mom and he was just going to live with Ryan until he got on his feet and saved up enough money to get a place of his own (only for two and a half months).

Anyway, this happened a couple months ago. So the question is…Ryan’s wife seemed to be flirting with Jess the whole time he lived with them. Ryan came out of their bedroom where he was playing a computer game and he saw his wife with her head on Jess’ chest and Jess’ arm was around her. As soon as Jess saw Ryan come out, he kind of shrugged Ryan’s wife off of his chest really fast. Another time, Ryan and his wife got in a fight and his wife went to Jess for comfort and Jess would give her a hug and stuff. Also, Ryan said that his wife giggles alot when Jess says something and when Jess moved out and got a place of his own, whenever Jess would call, Ryan would talk to him but all of a sudden his wife would want to talk to him. Ryan said that one time, his wife and Jess were talking on the phone; or more that his wife was talking and Jess was listening; and it had no subject at all. They were basically talking about nothing. His wife was telling Jess about her health and then about her life when she was in high school and after awhile they had been talking for two hours!

Anyway, so that’s basically it. And also; Jess had a girlfriend the whole time he was living with Ryan (he doesn’t have a girlfriend anymore he broke up with her because she cheated on him).

So my question is:
Do you think Ryan’s wife has a thing for Jess?
Do you think Jess kind of likes her? He had a girlfriend at the time and was a lot more cuddly with his girlfriend when she was over so that’s what makes me think he just being nice to Ryan’s wife. But I’m not sure, what do you think?

What’s going on?

Can we fix the national debt without addressing health care?

health saving account
David asked:

Our national debt is now over $10 trillion. Health care is the largest part of our budget. In fact Medicare alone accounts for over 20% of it; never mind Medicaid! The national debt is projected to double in the next 10 years if things aren’t changed. So, if health care reform doesn’t pass, or the reform that does doesn’t end up saving us money, can we reasonably be expected to be able to balance the budget and pay down the national debt? If you think so please explain how. Also, if health care doesn’t pass, how long will it be until it is up for debate again? 10…20 years? Will it be too late by then?

Medi-Cal re-determination?

health saving account
C S asked:

I had a $800 deductable before medi-cal would pay any medical expense. I had to pay for my doctors visit and medications 100%. I will be 65 in two months, I got married last year, I am classifified as permanet disable.

Social security said when I got married that my husband income had nothing to do with my medi-cal benefits. I received a form in the mail for medi-cal annual redetermination form, and they want to know all kinds of questions about my household income. He owns properties and has a saving account, and I do not have anything in my name.

My question is if I do not return the questionaire would I now have to pay the monthly deductible for premium of $88.00; currently no premiums are deducted from my check. I have Scan and medi-care is my supplemental health insurance , they pay what medi-cal does not pay.

The questionaire states that if not receive back your medi-cal benefits will be stopped. Does that mean all together or that I will have to pay the premiums?
