How do rules of an HSA apply if I got married late in the year?
John D asked:
With a Health Savings Account (HSA), under normal circumstances, I understand that I can make a qualified withdrawal at any time, in the year of the qualified expense or in later years. Also I can make a contribution to my HSA for the previous year up until April 15. My question is how these rules apply since I got married late last year in November and added my wife to my insurance then. Can I now make withdrawals based on medical expenses she had prior to our marriage? I know for tax-filing purposes, it is only my marriage status on the last day of the year that determines whether I file single or married. Anyone have information on this? In June, I paid $2,000 in medical expenses for my wife (fiance at the time). I’d like to know if I can now make a withdrawal from my HSA for that $2,000. I look forward to your answers!

How best to spend cafeteria healthcare funds at my new job? ?
Tucson Kate asked:
I am just about leave for a new job. I currently have a high deductible plan paired with a health savings account. At my new job, they give us about $400 a month in “cafeteria” funds, meaning we can use them how we want… either to buy insurance (pre-tax) or take the cash (post-tax). I plan to go back on my husband’s insurance (for about $80 a month), but I’m unsure how best to use the funds. Would it be best to take the cash, even though I will lose a good chunk to taxes? Can I keep my HSA even though I won’t be on a high deductible plan anymore? Or is there another option, like a flex spending account (but I doubt I could use all of it up in a year). Thank you for your help!
We don’t have children and are considering doing fertility treatments in the future as well…. I’m not sure if that is important but if there is a way we could do a longterm savings for that it might be helpful!

Question about an accrual account and business checking account?
Dee Dee asked:
My familiy owns 50% of a business, and there is a business partner who owns the other 50%. Due to health issues the business partner is selling her half. She has decided that when she sells, she is taking the contents of the accrual account and the checking account (and possibly any other savings). This seems extremely wrong, and possible illegal to me. Can anyone tell me if this is in fact something that shouldn’t happen, and what we can do to stop it? Thank you very much.

Would it be better to set up a bank account or buy U.S. savings bonds for my new grand daughter?
mrscmmckim asked:
I want to do something for her that will help secure her financial future. My health isn’t all that great so I might not be around to see her grow up so I want some way to let her know I care.
I love all the answers and am still undecided but now have about a grand to get started…..putting it to a vote should help me decide.
